The Best Razors for Shaving your Bikini Area
You might think you know how to shave your pubic regions and bikini area, but it’s not usually one of those things you take lessons in. If you have experienced a rash or burn in this area, you know the physical pain, how it can ruin a look and will know what a pain in the (well…) it is. Out of all of the body zones this is an area you should never rush (never dry shave in a hurry, it’s not worth it!). It’s enough to make you cross your super-smooth legs.
Read on to find out how to shave this important area like a pro...
1. Shop for the RIGHT razor and say no to discomfort
There are many exasperating pitfalls when shaving your bikini line. From awkward angles, reduced visibility and reaching all the wonderful nooks and crannies of the female form... oh, and the risk razor bumps. You need to find a solution and your body deserves the best shave experience.
Many women simply keep on shaving their bikini line and put up with these problems as they feel like they have to. No, you and your skin never have to put up with discomfort! To get a close shave, without irritation, you just need the right razor. Choose one with multiple blades, as this will allow less force but more effect. Moisturising gel strips also make a world of difference to this delicate area. Even if you don’t consider yourself to have sensitive skin, you can still get razor bumps and rashes if you are using the wrong razor.
With the bikini area, it's not just about an all-over clean shave — you can have some fun shaping and tidying up with a trimmer whether it’s a traditional landing strip, a more elaborate lighting bolt or a romantic heart shape. The finished style you go for is entirely up to you.

2. Spend 10 minutes warming up
Now you have your wonder tool you will be keen to get shaping and shaving. But before you start, spend about 10 minutes in warm water first — whether soaking in the bath or relaxing in the steam of a nice hot shower. The warmth will soften the outer layer of skin, decreasing chances of razor burn and making it easier to remove hair. Then gently brush the area with a wet flannel to remove dead skin cells or loose hair. Next, trim any long hair with the bikini trimmer so that is easier to shave and any hair that is staying is neat and tidy.
3. Use a clear shaving gel
Never look to dry shave your bikini area, it’s enough to make you wince. Invest in a quality shave gel to ensure an effortless glide across the skin. Alternatively many of the Wilkinson Sword products, including Intuition Complete, have a hydrating lubrication strip built into the razor head to ensure a smooth glide.
4. Shave with the hair growth (not against)
Before you start to shave, pull the skin taut and take a look at the different directions of hair growth. For the best shave we recommend shaving in one fluid direction — with the hair growth. If you go against the grain of the private hair you are risking razor burn, rashes and bumps. This is another reason to use a high-quality razor — many women simply go against the grain when shaving the bikini area as the blade they are using is blunt, badly designed or is too wide to fit in the contours, so in desperation, shaving against the grain seems the most effective method to do battle with a poor blade (resulting in a painful, angry red bikini line). Having chosen a premium razor specifically for the bikini area (step 1) we can reassure you that shaving with the hair growth will be effective — the hair will be removed smoothly and swiftly.
One movement of the blades through the area should be enough if your razor has multiple blades. Razors with only one blade will mean you have to go over the same area several times, resulting in razor burn — ouch!
5. Apply a cold compress
Wash off any residual trimmed hair and gel and then hold a cold flannel to the area for 5-10 minutes to soothe skin and reduce the likelihood of irritation. Then dab on an unscented bikini area post-shave balm to soothe, and reduce razor bumps, redness and itching.
6. Beautify your bikini zone
It’s vital when shaving any body zone to moisturise your skin after. Look out for feminine-specific lotions which are gynecologist and dermatologist tested for safety. Also try to avoid any scented products in this area which could irritate skin. Apply onto skin and make sure the moisturiser has been fully absorbed before getting dressed — tight fitting clothes like leggings could exacerbate irritation if there is excess moisture, and this can lead to inflamed follicles in the groin.
7. Clean and replace
Every time you shave, you should rinse the blades with warm or hot water to ensure the blades are kept clean and to remove any hair and dead skin build up. If you are trying to unclog the blades with a fingernail (ahem) it is time for a replacement blade in order to save your bikini area and your manicure. A blade should last for around 5 to 7 shaves.
Investing in a bathroom razor holder is the best solution for keeping your blades free from rust and bacteria, which can cause skin rashes.
And that is a beautifying course on how to best shave your bikini area, to not only ensure the best success at removing hair via shaving but also protect your delicate skin.
